Gel-X, acrylic, builder gel or dual forms?

Four ways to add length, four very different experiences two weeks later. Here's the honest comparison — including what each actually costs in the cities we cover.

The four systems, honestly

Gel-X (soft gel tips)

Full-cover soft gel tips bonded over the whole nail, cured under LED. Lightweight, no odor, no drilling to apply, and removal is a soak — the gentlest full-length option. Wears 3–4 weeks. The catch: they're pre-shaped tips, so extreme lengths and dramatic custom curves are better served by sculpted systems.

Acrylic

The classic liquid-and-powder sculpt. Strongest, most sculptable, cheapest per set — and the hardest on nails when applied or removed carelessly. If you love very long, very durable, or heavily jeweled sets, this is still the workhorse. Insist on gentle prep and a proper soak-off.

Builder gel (BIAB) / structured gel

A thick gel applied over your natural nail (or a short extension) with a reinforced apex. The "strength without length" option — ideal if your goal is growing your own nails out under protection.

Dual forms

Gel or acrygel sculpted inside a reusable mold pressed onto the nail — no tips, no glue line, light and strong. Fewer techs offer it because it's technique-heavy; the ones who do tend to be excellent, and wear routinely stretches past a month.

Cost per wear: the only number that matters

A $65 Gel-X set worn 3 weeks is ~$22/week. A $90 dual-form set worn 5 weeks is $18/week. A $60 acrylic set plus a $55 fill over 5 weeks is $23/week. The "expensive" studios are usually the cheap ones — the LA and Atlanta price guides run the full math for each city.
